Joshua Justman, VP NEW BUSINESS
In a world undeniably dominated by tech giants, there is something evocative about large family-owned businesses. And one run by a family that has grown a reputation for being driven by an unbridled passion for innovating and serving customers in an unparallel way. On a mission to provide value-added packaging, display, and fulfillment solutions that help companies thrive within the competitive retail landscape, Morley Justman, CEO, and Russell Justman, its VP, founded Justman Packaging & Display in 1989. With decades of experience prior to founding the company, they recognized that there was more to the packaging industry on the west coast then just brown boxes with basic printing. Back in those days you would turn to the East Coast to buy elevated packaging. It was then they embarked on the path of value added packaging and displays and never looked back.
For years the company thrived, growing a reputation for one of the top packaging and display companies on the west coast. And over the decades, as the company grew, Morley’s son Joshua, currently Justman Packaging’s VP of New Business, was learning from the ground up.
“I remember as a kid, I was in NYC with my father. We were in the fragrance section at Saks Fifth Avenue; my Dad was showing me the various packaging we produced. I couldn’t get over how gorgeous our products were. I remember he held a foil embossed Giorgio box and said; ‘this needs to be perfect, every element, always...we are a part of the brand.’ I was immediately hooked!”
Over the years, young Joshua spent most of his days inside the company’s facility learning the business fundamentals, working on the production lines after school and during the summers. “One element of the business that really inspired me was color. Hitting color tones can be a tricky business, especially with the clientele that we work with. Learning color is a never-ending process!”
Based on his interest, it was a natural choice that Joshua obtained a dual degree in business management and the Chinese language. After attending university in China for almost a year after college, Joshua joined the family business full time.
As the company grew, Joshua was learning every element of Justman Packaging & Display, working full time in sales and account management, and preparing to take the company to the next level. And so he did as time passed by. With his efforts and entrepreneurial vision, Joshua pushed the company to become more technologically-advanced and, subsequently, reach new heights of success.
“My generation grew up with technology and instant access to information at our fingertips, I could always see that consumer products were heading that direction as well and speed to market was going to be more important than ever. It was important to invest in more instantaneous printing methods like large format digital as well as an extremely fast paced fulfillment division to reflect where consumer demand was headed.”
“We understand the nuances of all major consumer products industries. For over 30 years Justman has successfully provided insight and innovation to create practical solutions that meet customers’ objectives,” asserts Joshua. What steers this family-oriented company ahead of the competition curve is its portfolio of unrivaled packaging and display solutions and services, fulfillment execution, expertise in cutting-edge technologies, powerful in-house capabilities, unparalleled customer service, and a team of experienced and competent experts. With over three decades into the business, Justman Packaging & Display combines the process, technology, and intellectual capital necessary to bring products to market at an unparalleled speed in the industry.
Industry-Best Packaging and Display Solutions
Given the visibility brands now have into the nuances of their customers buying behavior, it is more important than ever to offer customized packaging programs to allow brands to target their consumers more directly and strategically by market
Joshua stresses the importance of offering customization in packaging to brands. “Given the visibility brands now have into the nuances of their customers buying behavior, it is more important than ever to offer customized packaging programs to allow brands to target their consumers more directly and strategically by market.” Justman kick-started their digital printing division by procuring advanced large format digital presses. “The technology keeps getting better and better and in turn, we keep buying newer and better presses. This adds to our operational efficiency, and continually allows us to launch more customized packaging programs in a more versatile manner, which reduces costs on all fronts.”
Justman Packaging & Display specializes in designing and manufacturing various packaging solutions, including printed and foil embossed folding cartons, corrugated boxes, POP display programs, set up boxes, and thermoforms. Each of which is dreamed up from concept to fulfillment. Justman designs, produces, packs, and distributes anything from temporary and permanent display campaigns to large scope promotional direct to consumer kitting programs.
In a nutshell, the company supports clients all the way from initial creative development to full-scale production and fulfillment execution. They provide award-winning packaging and display programs tailored to the market’s needs while encompassing the standards of the targeted retailers involved.
Justman Packaging & Display’s clientele spans cosmetics, consumer electronics, D2C, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, snack and beverage, and toy, among several others. “Being able to marry our speed-to-market capabilities with extensive insight into consumer behavior and the nuances amongst major retailers, we understand the right technology, equipment, partners needed to build successful solutions for our clients,” says Joshua. For example, within the cosmetics industry, color and image quality plays an increasingly critical role. Justman Packaging & Display knows this and, to that end, offers top printing and finishing technology that ensures the color on the finished package meets the client’s requirements.
A Unique Approach Ensuring Excellence
“What gives us an extra edge is our powerful three-pronged approach in providing solutions and services to customers,” mentions Joshua. To put things into perspective, Justman Packaging & Display’s first step to engaging clients is by thoroughly understanding their needs and product specifications. This is followed by the firm’s design, graphics, and prototyping department taking over the project, where its highly qualified and creative team of designers and engineers builds structural samples and prototypes.
Once the design is finalized, the team proceeds with the production process. With a wide variety of state-of-the-art production equipment and resources and a dedicated team of seasoned experts at every position, Justman Packaging & Display’s production process accentuates speed as they execute on each client’s high-quality packaging and display programs.
Finally, the company’s fulfillment division—comprising assembly and packing, warehousing and on-demand inventory, and shipping direct to consumer and retail—brings the final product to the market.
Elaborating on the fulfillment expertise, Joshua mentions, “Our fulfillment capabilities and cloud-based inventory management system empower brands to dispatch their products to their final destination quickly, primed and prepared for immediate, effective consumer experience.”
Justman Packaging & Display also places a great focus on sustainability. The company offers the option of using post-consumer recycled board, FSC and SFI certified board, soy-based inks, using 100 percent water-based inks with zero VOC; material waste from the production process can also be fully recycled.
The company assists in implementing brand-based custom sustainability programs by working with brands in creating overall sustainability goals. ”In 2020 we finalized a semi closed loop recycling program for one of our largest customers. This was done through a combination of substituting their corrugated to 100 percent pre and post consumer recycled board as well as working with their fulfillment centers to close their recycling loop. We pickup paper waste at their facilities truckloads at a time and re-pulp it back into the board they are using in their packaging. This program in particular resulted in an estimated 31,000 trees saved as well as reducing long-term green house gas emissions by 43 percent. This makes me very proud.”
Building on the Legacy
A cloud based operation with remote client visibility is critical; if the client cannot have clear visibility in real time, they cannot make real time decisions and give real time answers within their organization
“As I grew with the company, the business grew with me. I work exceptionally close with our top clients, this gives me clear visibility into their needs and in turn, a very clear understanding of the investments we need to make as a company.”
I have always been passionate to embrace advanced technologies,” says Joshua. In fact, he took the company to greater heights with his tireless efforts to innovate. Towards the dawn of the last decade, Joshua’s vision to make their manufacturing facility “smart” resulted in significant investments in automation and cloud technologies. “A cloud-based operation with remote client visibility is critical; if the client cannot have clear visibility in real-time, they cannot make real-time decisions and give real-time answers within their organization,” says Joshua
He served as the helmsman to automate Justman Packaging & Display’s fulfillment division and build a cloud-based warehouse management system. Building an uninterrupted collaboration between their various departments, the company could streamline and optimize their business operations— empowering them to establish long-term partnerships with an array of prominent brands, like L’Oreal and Kind Snacks. Justman Packaging & Display has large conveyor systems, where fulfillment programs such as batch coding, laser jetting, and shrink-wrapping can be performed quickly and efficiently.
A Culture that Steers Growth
Joshua prides himself on being a part of Justman Packaging & Display’s team that fosters a collaborative work culture. The leadership team maintains a culture of open-mindedness and transparency. “One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is our vision to get things done quickly and effectively. All our employees thrive off of pushing the envelope; they are committed and dedicated to their roles within the company,” asserts Joshua. Justman Packaging & Display has a two-fold growth plan for the road ahead. On one end, the company is looking to expand its geographical footprint. “We already have strong presence in the West coast, and deep rooted partnerships in the Mid- West, East coast as well as South-East and Asia,” states Joshua. Alongside, the company will continue to invest in technology and infrastructure to support top-level creative customization and speed-to-market packaging solutions.
